Starting this post ended me in a little journey that you might see stemming from what I believe is one major global symptom. My thought process was somewhat simple... What is the most rooted problem that we face as a global community... What are the fundamental issues that are feeding that problem... And finally how do we close the loop on the issues that we face so that we can evolve into the next phases of our development as a global culture.
Instability in under developed regions...
Whether it is refugee's fleeing war and dictatorships in the the Middle East; children being evacuated from Latin America to escape murderous drug cartels; or the humanitarian crisis of militants mutilating women in African countries there is one thing that is abundantly clear in our global community there is a commonality linking 'third world' or otherwise underdeveloped countries to fall into a spiral of instability. This is even evident inside of North America; increased crime rates and degradation in areas such as Detroit where income is low.
Solution: To me it is clear that a bar of universal standards needs to be applied to ensure that a basic level of living needs to be met to resolve this issue facing our generation. This can be broken up into perhaps several smaller but equally as global goals:
Universal human rights standards...
A massive issue facing our generation (and the many before us) is that there is seemingly no universal standard and enforcement of human rights... Whatever their gender, race, or creed every person living on this earth should have a basic ability to live and that right should be defended. While I believe this is a widely agreed upon principal; the application is sporadic or political as both intentional and negligent genocidal patterns continue to occur.
Solution: Through facilities such as the United Nations a global standard needs to be agreed upon and a coalition of countries need to be establish to ensure enforcement of human rights standards.
Universal education standards...
One of the major contributing factors to the ability of a majority faction to impose oppressive behaviors onto a lower class faction is education. This is a framework to the development of a culture or region and in some cases a weapon of oppression is to under educate and thereby perpetuate the lack of human rights.
Solution: Similar to the human rights 'constitution;' a global economic plan must be instituted to supply a universal education standard to all peoples. Basic educational principals and higher level educational opportunities will help drive diverse and global solutions to existing and future problems and is an investment in the future of our human culture.
Universal healthcare...
Another driving force behind instability (aside from blatant violations of human right or the suppression of education on a culture) is the inability for a group of people to gain basic health care. It is taken for granted in developed countries that we can easily obtain simple antibiotics and have facilities like emergency rooms. However, in under developed countries there is a consistent concern of what 'western civilization' would consider all but eradicated sicknesses.
Solution: Another issue for our United Global Constitution that supplies basic rights for education and human rights has to apply a standard for health care. What is a minimum level of care that should be guaranteed to every man, woman and child on this earth and how do we balance the cost of providing it through the global economy.
Universal environmental standards...
In order to add weight to the social costs of a free market economy; pollution, resource utilization and general sustainability practices must be enforced at a global level. This is evident in current arguments on climate change (or if you don't believe that then look at the rising sea levels, pollution levels, or deforestation). No matter what your belief we all have to agree that this planet and our ability to inhabit it for generations to come should be a goal.
Solution: Sustainability standards on our natural resources need to be agreed upon in the global community as well as commitments to increase pollution regulation and lower not just emissions but other environmentally hazardous practices as dictated by the scientific community.
Sustainable energy...
Power (electricity or propulsion) has become a requirement of the modern world. Clean renewable energy is a requirement to implement a major portion of the environmental standards and contribute to a perpetual improvement to the economy. This is another global investment requirement (such as education and human rights defense).
Solution: A recurring investment plan mush be establish into the field of scientific innovation for the general good. Current investments in solar, wind and other renewable energy alternatives must be continued to ensure stimulated growth.
Sustainable (available) clean water...
Clean water supplies continue to broaden as an issue as water filtration standards decline in the western world and are non existent in some under developed countries. Rising sea levels are pouring salt into otherwise fresh water sources and the lack of environmental standards has led to increased levels of hormones and toxins in the existing fresh water supply.
Solution: Holy cow the global economy is paying for a lot at this point. However, how can we not afford to ensure as a basic human right that water (the essence of life) is available in a pure form for renewable consumption.
Sustainable (available) healthy food...
As the demand for food has increased so too have the standards of care and health considerations declined. In the case of underdeveloped countries the strict availability of food can be an underlying issue and as you go up the availability ladder there becomes a lessening standard of nutritional requirements on producers.
Solution: Overlap environmental, renewable and nutritional standards on the growth and harvest community. Including the incentives to begin the growth and distribution of food products in underdeveloped portions of the world thereby creating work and food solutions simultaneously.
Income inequality...
All of the above are driving a solution to the social standard. Basic human needs that should be upheld and catered so that everyone born to this earth has the same opportunities. From that point it becomes an equal wage for equal work. Know that when I say income inequality I don't mean to attack the 1% that makes more than the bottom 50% combined. What I mean to say is that there is no global economic standard of equality when it comes to labor and taxation of income.
Solution: As a portion of the human rights solutions an abolishment of global slave and child labor must be enforced so that the global economy can rest equally on the supply and demand curves; provided that they do not impede a social cost that is too high to sustain. This will allow for the increased satisfaction of a global population and moreover lead to the economic solution for providing the other humanitarian rights listed above through wage and purchase taxation.
Sustainable global economy...
We've solved the majority of worlds problems through the creation of a global economy; incentivized to stimulate growth and equality through social policies and paid for through global taxation of the wages and consumption. All of that was perpetually driven by the education, wage equality and other basic human rights standards. We've solved the idea of environmentally (literally) running out of the natural resources that fuel that economy by creating a coalition of environmental minimums and investments in sustainability. The last bit is to ensure that we do not repeat the mistakes of recent economic civilizations and destroy it all by allowing for an under regulated economic platform that is prone to destabilization.
Solution: Global economic regulatory standards must be set to ensure that the banking and investment of our newly found global economy does not collapse due to poor or over invested equity. Look no further than the North American standard of Canada that has not seen an economic crash in over 100 years... During with the United States suffered more than a dozen such crashes.
Kenneth, I highly enjoyed reading your list of the world's biggest problems. My thought process was pretty similar to yours, finding the most rooted problems we face as a global community. We have a similar point on sustainability efforts and using wind, water, and solar power as alternatives. However, a lot of our problems were different. You focused more on sustainability, economy, and rights. Mine included those as well as thing like war and disease.
