Venture Concept No. 1

Letter from the author;
Why are we here?

Just as the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step; the experience of an amazing meal starts through a single bite; or the inspiration you gain from a museum masterpiece originated with a single stroke, so too does this book begin with a single page.  Not that this book would equate to a delicious meal cooked by a refined chef or to a beautiful canvas painted by a masterful hand.  Those works require years of dedication and a talent; a love of your art beyond what a normal passer-by would have.  This book is different… it is an exposure.  The purpose of this book is not for finance or for fame but rather to provide a road map for the reader to navigate through life knowing that they are the masters of their own fate; they drive their own success.  More than just motivation though this rhetoric is to provide the reader with the tools to be successful; with the template for their life’s plan.
The only difference between you and the author of this book is that they saw a pattern in their day to day life.  They saw it replicate again and again with different aspects of their life.  It was in their work, in their school, it was with them when they tried something new or repeated something they had done a thousand times.  The more they saw the pattern within themselves the more that it began to appear; and then they saw the pattern emerge in others.  It was a pattern of motivation and procrastination, of self confidence or doubt, and when the pattern was utilized in a particular way it was a driver of production and success.  Why did this person see the pattern when no one else has?  A fair question, there is no discerning difference between you and them… The truth is that they worked their whole life for it and yet tripped and fell in the answer as anyone of you might.
Let us all begin this journey now together to walk through one page at a time how the author of this book and you both could have changed lives forever…

Opportunity:

There is an overwhelming majority of people in the world today that want more than they have.  They want better jobs; to complete more schooling, to lose weight or finish some other project in their life.  In some cases, they have the heart and will power to push themselves hard enough to be successful; however, they lose motivation over and over again as they are pushed back down the hill of failure.  A pattern of two steps forward and two steps back can be demoralizing and without the right perspective of week over week or month over month they failures of one day can set back your goals by years.

Innovation:

Our innovation is a planning tool; that has built in plans.  Want to remodel a bathroom, start school, lose weight?  All admirable goals to obtain and while every home, school and body is different there are fundamental similarities in the way you plan for these activities and some similar things that you have to measure towards success.  Our application would start with a layer of your day to day tasks or "reflex tasks" (dishes, dry cleaning, laundry, cleaning, work, school, etc.) and then allow for the addition of ad hoc "tactical tasks;" like replacing burnt out light bulbs, calling the plumber, etc.  Then you add on the third and final layer; which is your longer term goals.  Think of a couch to 5k type guide but for multiple types of activities that would lead to general health.

Venture Concept:

Aside from the concept of helping them to achieve their goals and the factor of motivation for their continued completion of tasks onwards toward them; there is also the factor of "do you need help with that?"  Imagine if you're planning a bathroom remodel. You type it into your app and it pushes out here are the X number of things and Y number of hours it will take... Feeling suddenly overwhelmed?  Why not link it to Angie's list so you can hire a contractor instead for that goal and move onto a new one?  Partnering with like applications (Uber, Angie's List, Groupon, etc.) could be a valuable way to create good synergies.  There was a motivational speech that I once heard that said if you showed me your schedule (how you use the 24 hours in the day) that I could show you where you were wasting time that could be used to get to your dreams.  What this app would focus on doing is inching it's way towards making your 24 hours as efficient towards a healthy lifestyle as possible.  Similar applications; like Things and Streaks would be basic competitors; however, they all assume that you already know the basics of what needs to be done to be successful.  iDrive would change that perspective by aligning tasks and milestones to your goals based on true professional guidance.

Other minor elements:

The secret sauce for this concept is the combined years of experience in moving both business, personal and lifestyle goals through this process.  I’ve taken the bumps and bruises from repeated failure and noticed the pattern that is required for success.  Then took that pattern and applied professional project management processes to ensure and track that success to your long term goals and motivate you along the way.  The next addition to the venture would be a book; essentially taking what our innovation is and opening up the hood for all to see what we’ve done and how it is beneficial beyond just the application itself.  How these simple steps can take you from 0 to 100 in no time flat on any project that you set your mind to.  For me though; I take inspiration from two men of late that revolutionized the world.  Firstly; Steve Jobs, and so I will cannibalize my own system and rebuild it again and again to ensure its evolution.  Secondly; Manoj Bhargava, and so I will reinvest into the world community and find other people that are looking to really make a difference and give them the means to pay it forward.

Amazon Whisperer

Describe the revenue drivers you currently include in your business concept for this class. Revenue drivers are the different ways you make money.

The primary revenue driver for my business would be the application iDrive itself.  As a task based application with goal tracking abilities the application would sell on the Apple App store and eventually for android devices.

Describe what kind of product offering you believe should be next. What's the next thing your customers want?

Next would be the book; essentially taking what our idea is and opening up the hood for all to see what we’ve done and how it is beneficial beyond just the application itself.  How these simple steps can take you from 0 to 100 in no time flat on any project that you set your mind to.

Describe how this "next" thing will enhance your existing product/service offering. Does it improve the user experience, does it increase customer switching costs, does it foster customer loyalty, etc.?

I think primarily it will enhance the user experience as well as foster customer loyalty.  It’s an element of trust and understand to say “here’s our secret recipe and I want you to use it again and again and again to make yourself more successful.”

Go to Amazon and try to find a product that is similar to the one you want to offer next. Describe the product. Include a picture of the product.

I went to the app store and picked up one application that I know will be of primary competition; called “Streaks”

There idea is simple; take a few things that you want to start doing daily and add them to your daily reminder count and the application will keep track of how many you complete.

What are the customer reviews for the product? What, exactly, do customers not like about the product? What do they like about it?

They are mostly 5 stars all around on reviews; but for the purpose of building a competitive edge I’ve filtered by “most critical” reviews to find out what is missing.  One MAJOR flaw in the design is that it truly will only let you track 6 tasks that you want to perform daily.  Another that was brought up several times is that you can’t “undo” or go back to the previous day and submit a completion.  If your day ends at 2am and you completed anything between 12 and 2 then it will have to count for “tomorrow.”

Describe what design/usability changes you'd make to the product.

The streaks themselves are a huge motivator; but is eating a healthy meal every day (as the phot suggests) your goal?  Or is your goal to lose weight.  I think the task streak is amazing and needs to be a part of design for our application but there have to be overarching goals attached as well so that the user can see; as a result of your 14 day streak you’ve lost 5 pounds (for example).

Describe why you think this product would make a good addition to your current product/service offering.

This is a good keep it simple stupid addition; like a junior version; or even a sub application for what our business plan is.  Something that would tie to your fitbit or iWatch to drive you to see today through to the very end.  iDrive will pick up on the weeks and months that follow!

My Unfair Advantage...

Generate a list of all of the resources in your venture (produce a list of at least 10 resources that you already possess). This can include your human capital, social capital, financial capital, and capabilities. You may also discuss the organizational culture you intend to create (but, obviously, it's not a resource that you have, now.)

  1. Human capital (myself)
  2. Social Capital (my business partner in application development)
  3. Social Capital (my business partner in database development)
  4. Social Capital (my business partner in marketing and sales)
  5. Financial Capital ($100k to invest)
  6. Financial Capital (software and front end hardware acquired)
  7. Capabilities (15 years of experience in data management)
  8. Capabilities (10 years of experience in project management)
  9. Capabilities (merging the application with a “Why Drive” health and personal development book).
  10. Social Capital / Organizational Culture (my business partners and I have already worked together for multiple years and have a strong social and professional bond).

Conduct a "VRIN" analysis for each resource. That is, describe, for each resource, how it is valuable, rare, inimitable (how hard it is to copy by others), and non-substitutable (are there other resources that can provide the same benefits?).

  • How am I valuable; I go back to my original post; “Who am Ken…” I have collected an exceptional professional record over the last 15 plus years in business controls and analytics; however, I am most known for my incredible tenacity at completing projects in the green by organizing them in a very specific and deliberate way that we will mirror in this application.

  • Social Capital (my business partner in application development); with a Masters in Computer Science and more than 10 years in application and data management, this partner is my right hand in venture and is in the top 5% of people I have ever met in this category.  He will be my Chief Operating Officer.  He knows and has 5 years of experience in smashing my head against the table until my thoughts fall out onto paper.
  • Social Capital (my business partner in database development); with a Masters in Business (specializing in Information Systems) and more than 15 years of experience this is the most indispensable member of our team in that he will be the designer and creator of the back end structure that will drive the iDrive platform for end users.  He is like my Batman; he lives in the shadows and kicks the butt of any problem I throw at him… and there is only one of him (Top 1%). He will be my Chief Information Officer
  • Social Capital (my business partner in marketing and sales); I’ve never met a man more focused on framing issues.  Moreover, though he knows how to focus me in the best ways and is my Chief of Marketing and Communications. And may I steal the words of Bruce McGill in Cinderella Man and say “they ought to put [his] mouth in a circus!”

  • Financial Capital ($100k to invest) – it is rare to me; considering that if I lose it then it is a personal investment gone.
  • Financial Capital (software and front end hardware acquired) – this is more replaceable as it is software that will grow over time (open source) and hardware that will be required to be replaced over time.  That said it is a resource and I already have it :)

  • Capabilities (15 years of experience in data management); this is valuable and (I would say) irreplaceable to me; however, it is not exceptionally rare. That said it IS rare that this length of experience leads to these types of ideas.
  • Capabilities (10 years of experience in project management); this is valuable and (I would say) irreplaceable to me; however, it is not exceptionally rare. That said it IS rare that this length of experience leads to these types of ideas.
  • Capabilities (merging the application with a “Why Drive” health and personal development book).  This is one that I think is also extremely valuable as it robs from the business model of Disney and merges the application as a ‘self help tool’ that will pair with a growing book market of ‘self motivation’ and ‘success’ books that are on the market today.  If we could combine with motivational speakers it would be a good 1 -2 -3 punch to market and sell off of each product.

  • Social Capital / Organizational Culture (my business partners and I have already worked together for multiple years and have a strong social and professional bond). This is priceless to me.  While I am closer to Zuckerberg (from a business vs. personal perspective) I do believe that having a strong working culture and people willing to brave into fire with you willingly is of utmost importance.  Sometimes great success can only come from trust.

After conducting the VRIN analysis, determine what your top resource is. Explain why it's more important to your venture than all of the other resources.

I think it is a strong tie between my business partner (Chief Operating Officer) and my (our) capabilities in project management and data management.  It sounds oddly egotistical but we have an experience that is unparalleled in the development of not only this concept but the software framework behind it.  While it would be difficult to replace the $100k or my CIO; these two things are absolutely irreplaceable to me.  If either were lost (my memory or my business partner) then the odds of success drop exponentially.
